Glen

Glen Currie

Race Director
Glen grew up on a farm in Methven. His passion for the outdoors began at an early age with him and his younger brother Braden Currie escaping into the foothills to ski, snowboard, tramp, hunt, motorbike, mountain bike and run whenever possible. Post schooling Glen completed a Bachelor of Education, specialising in Physical Education. Whilst studying he spent a number of summers in the Colorado chasing the snow. On graduating from University, Glen ran a residential outdoor pursuits program before spending a couple of years cycling around Europe and travelling in Africa.

On returning home to be based teaching in Methven, Glen discovered endurance sport and went about competing in as many iconic events throughout New Zealand as possible. In doing so he managed to win such races as the Goldrush, Peak to Peak, and twice finished third place in the Longest Day Coast to Coast. He has since competed in a number of events in China and throughout the world.

For him the Kathmandu Coast to Coast is Australasia’s race. It has all the components that are what it is to be a Kiwi or Aussie, adventure, competitiveness, scenery, daring and innovation. It is a race that will challenge the most seasoned of endurance racers and for many aspiring athletes be their life Everest.  It is New Zealand’s ultimate endurance event.
With no previous experience in multisport the Kathmandu Coast to Coast was to be his first Everest. He was a pure novice and a trip down the Waimakariri taking over eight hours and inclusive of 18 swims had him questioning whether completion was even going to be possible. However after a summer of adventures he was to complete his first ever Kathmandu Coast to Coast and to this day it remains as the most memorable race and training experience he has ever endured. His first ever Kathmandu Coast to Coast however will to this day remain as his highlight for the fact that the combination of the journey to completing the event and the feeling of completing the ultimate goal will be tough to surpass.
Glen is still based in Methven now with his young family of three boys and continues to be passionate about his backyard, and the training and racing opportunities it offers. He enjoys the fact that Canterbury back country is somewhat underrated in terms of New Zealand outdoor experience locations and that it allows for a fairly ‘ungroomed’ wilderness.

To now have the opportunity to be directly involved with the Kathmandu Coast to Coast crew is a dream. Glen looks forward to the challenge and opportunity to assist in providing as many people as possible the opportunity to achieve their goals in the most stunning endurance race in the world.
