Compulsory checks

Mountain Run Stage

You can complete your Mountain Stage Gear check at Kathmandu Stores nationwide between Friday 19th January and Wednesday 7th February, 5pm. The following items are required for your Mountain Stage gear check;

  • Running shoes (socks are highly recommended also). The run is very rocky and you will cross the river numerous times. Choose a shoe with lots of contact surface - the soles with long high knobs can be very slippery on the rocks. There are not many muddy areas.
  • Backpack (must be large enough to fit all compulsory gear and food into – recommended volume 12L+  - recommend putting clothing into Ziploc bags to keep dry – do not vacuum pack it, there is a gear check at Goat Pass.)
  • Thermal gloves
  • Thermal balaclava or hat
  • Waterproof jacket with hood (seam sealed and constructed of durable material)
  • Waterproof pants (seam sealed and constructed of durable material)
  • Long Sleeve thermal base layer top
  • Full length thermal base layer pants
  • Long sleeved thermal mid layer top (with insulation properties approx. 220gsm or greater)
  • Whistle – attached to outside of pack or bib
  • Foil Survival BAG (NOT blanket)
  • First aid kit including;
    • 1.5m long (unstretched) roll of 5 cm wide crepe bandage
    • 5m long roll of 2 cm wide strapping tape
    • 10 Band-Aid strips
    • Triangular bandage
    • Scissors
    • 4 x pain relief tablets

Please note that no other gear or equipment can be checked at the Mountain Stage Gear check. All Kayak Stage Gear is scrutinised on the Saturday morning at the river – this gear cannot be pre checked. You do not need to bring in your Camping gear for the check.

Cycle Stages

You can complete your Cycle Stages check* at Avantiplus retailers nationwide between Friday 19th January and Wednesday 7th February, 5pm. The following items are required for your Cycle check;

  • Cycle helmet (NZ/Aus Standards Approved). Correctly fitted Approved cycle helmet free of defects / cracks
  • Reflective ankle bands for both ankles
  • Front and rear cycle lights to NZ Transport Agency standard (charged or new batteries) must be attached to the cycle
  • Pump, repair kit, spare tube/tubular
  • Bike (please remember to take your bike shoes so that your cleats can be checked)

Please Note: All bike stores are very busy at this time of the year so please contact them in advance of having your bike checked to arrange a suitable time.  Please do not expect to turn up to a bike store and have your bike check completed while you wait. The bike check isn’t a free 'bike service', so if you need/want a service please advise the store in advance and they can book you in (bike service at your cost).

This check is to ensure you have the required gear for the event, and to provide a basic check of its condition at that point in time. Not everything can realistically be picked up in a basic check or be visible at the time of inspection. An inherent risk of cycling is a failure during the ride due to a number of factors including breakage  or malfunction and possible injury to the rider and others is a possibility. Neither the Kathmandu Coast to Coast or any Avanti store or staff are in any way liable for the condition of your bicycle at the event or other point of time.  The pre race check  is not a complimentary bike service and competitors are solely responsible for the maintenance and safety of your bicycling equipment. Any work required to bring your bike or equipment up to standard will incur normal costs. It is the competitors sole responsibility to ensure your bike is in good working order for the event and recommend that you have your bike serviced prior to the event and that you re check it after transit.
